The University of California, Irvine (UCI) Primary Electrical Improvements, Step 4 design-build project was designed with an emphasis and focus on enhancing flexibility, redundancy, maintainability, operation and capacity to accommodate future growth at the campus. The electrical improvements also have the additional benefit of supporting UCI’s electric vehicle charging stations, furthering UC Irvine’s Legacy of Sustainability initiative.

The campus upgrades increase the main university substation’s power capacity and include a new substation transformer and new 12kV switchgear at the main university substation. A new 12kV south substation was added on the outer campus utility loop to decentralize primary distribution. Other new additions to the electrical infrastructure were a new 12kV feeder from the main university substation to the south substation and a new 12kV feeder and duct bank system between the south substation and existing east substation.
